Spanish Teacher Clemente
Spanish lesson in Lake Atitlan

Hola! Me llamo Clemente.

I was born in San Pedro in 1984 and I have lived in the Lake Atitlan area all my life. I have a small family including my wife, Salome, and my daughter, Jamila. We have lived near San Marcos for 8 years. We love living here and enjoying the natural environment and excellent climate. We also enjoy getting to know the many travelers who visit San Marcos. It is a pleasure for us to share our customs, cooking, and way of life with visitors to the area.

My Education

I started my studies in 1988 in Guatemala City and I earned a degree in Tourism in 2001. Afterwards, I attended the University of San Carlos de Guatemala for three years, earning my teaching degree (PEM). I can speak three languages: Spanish, English and my native tongue Tzutujil (one of the 22 Mayan languages in Guatemala).

My Experience

I started teaching the Spanish language in 2005. Since then I have taught in several different local Spanish schools, including:

  • San Pedro Spanish School (2005-2007)
  • Cooperativa Spanish School (2008-2010)
  • Orbita Spanish School (2011-2013)
  • Mayab Spanish School (2013-2016)

In 2014, I began teaching students independently. I enjoy the freedom to offer students a flexible program and schedule. And I believe that students can learn Spanish more easily and more enjoyably when they can negotiate what they need directly with their teacher.

My Passion

Over the years I have taught students from many different parts of the world, including the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, England, Germany, Holland, France, Poland, Russia, Japan, South Africa, Switzerland, and Sweden. I cannot express how valuable it has been for me to connect with so many different people. I have worked in several fields, but teaching is my favorite occupation, because I enjoy interacting with people and learning about different cultures. Teaching is not just a job for me. It is my passion.

About San Marcos

I love many things about San Marcos. And I enjoy sharing the beauty and character of my village with my students. San Marcos is one of the quietest villages on Lake Atitlan. We are very connected to Nature here. The lake and the mountains surround us.

We have a rich culture from our Mayan heritage. The women here still wear their traditional clothes. And the people are proud to have maintained our values and our culture. Most of the people here grow their food in traditional ways and our weaving traditions still flourish. Our community is very cohesive. We help we other when we are in need. And the values we draw from our religion are very important to us.
